REASON FOR BECOMING INVOLVED WITH ACE
My professional goals have always revolved around working with at-risk students to assist this student population in actualizing their academic hidden potential; as well as, enhancing their self-esteem to cultivate productive citizens within their community.  I’ve had more than 30 years of work experience interacting with low-income and at-risk students.    From this experience, I have seen many students who were not aware of their academic potential, excel academically at the Community College level, and transfer to a four year institution of higher learning to further pursue their educational dreams and aspirations. Inclusive to achieving academic success is also the enhancement of self-worth and confidence.   These are my reasons for becoming involved with the Academy for College Excellence.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Lametha Northern has been involved with developmental education for 30 years working with college-level students earning a two-year degree or transferring to a four-year institution of higher education.  She has been instrumental in helping many students to realize their dream to earn a degree.

Currently, she is Acting Director of the Act 101 Program and tutorial Lab at Delaware County Community College.  She has also served in the capacity of counselor for two community colleges’ Act 101 Programs specializing in areas of problem-solving strategies, individual and group counseling.

Ms. Northern started her counselor training as a peer counselor and summer dorm counselor, and saw the great value of counseling and tutoring for students.  She received a dual B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from Widener University and earned a Master’s of Education degree in Counseling from Kutztown University.   Always interested in keeping current, she earned sixty-six credits in post-graduate courses from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA and studied at Penn State University completing the Chemical Dependency Counselor Training Program.  She also received a certificate for 130 hours of intensive training in Interpersonal Skills through the Robert K. Carkhuff Institute of Human Technology.   Ms. Northern has taught several first-level psychology courses for the Social Science Department of Delaware County Community College.

Within the span of thirty years, she has used her understanding of students to help each of them reach their full potential.  Her educational philosophy is to encourage students to reach beyond the present and prepare for tomorrow with a vision of excellence.
