At ACE, we take our inspiration from William Butler Yeats, who said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Just as our courses light a new fire for learning in vulnerable students; they light a fire for a new way of teaching among community college faculty to reach those students.

We help faculty change the way they understand, connect with and teach the most vulnerable students. Time and again, we help community college faculty reconnect with the thrill of teaching as they connect with vulnerable students to spark their thrill in learning.

About ACE

Break.png

The Academy for College Excellence (ACE) is a full-time, first-semester community college program that targets the needs of underprepared and at-risk students, while equipping them to succeed in the technology-driven, 21st-century economy. With higher retention rates than the average community college student population and improved academic success for students, ACE has proved remarkably effective.  A highly collaborative enterprise that teaches teamwork and personal responsibility, the ACE approach also promotes individuals’ self-exploration, self-improvement, and persistence. The result is a transformational learning experience unlike any its students have previously known.

ACE Outcomes

  1. Transform students from within
  2. Create tomorrow’s leaders
  3. Work within and change knowledge-based cultures
  4. Improve social justice in the local community
  5. Change the way community colleges work with vulnerable students

ACE’s curriculum includes an array of proven and innovative strategies that give at-risk students the best chance to move successfully into regular community college academic programs. ACE’s semester of college-credit courses lights the fire of intellectual curiosity in students and accelerates the acquisition of skills essential for academic success. Most importantly, ACE helps students take charge of their learning through innovative teaching methods that create conditions supportive of learning in their minds, bodies, and lives. The ACE semester lets students reclaim the educational experience as their own and gives them a secure foothold on pathways to knowledge-based careers.

Professional Development Events

Break.png

ACE offers a number of opportunities for growth for community college faculty, staff and administrators.

Institutes

  • Experiential Learning Institute (FELI)
The FELI is a 5-day institute that draws on core ACE curriculum around communication, working styles and leadership techniques. Participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, renew themselves professionally and get a taste of ACE. The FELI is also the entry point for anyone interested in becoming an ACE instructor.
  • ACE Executive Leadership Institute (ELI)
The Executive Leadership Institute series is designed for college presidents and high-level administrators. These events focus on helping the leadership team assess and evaluate the implementation of a project, and through this analysis begin to understand the cultural changes necessary to successfully improve the performance of the leadership team and the college. The workshops help begin a process which fosters culture change within the organization and improve the quality of relationships required at all levels of the college for successful implementation of change.

Community of Practice (CoP)

  • The Community of Practice (CoP) is a day-long gathering that provides the ACE community a place to connect and exchange ideas. Participation is a great way to contribute to the program as well as stay abreast of the latest innovations.

Workshops

  • Communication Workshop (PD 1)
This workshop is a two-day intensive focused on teaching work teams effective techniques to improve their communication.
  • Strengths & Styles Workshop (PD 2)
This workshop is a two-day intensive that allows members of a work team to discover their working styles with the goal of improving team outcomes and morale.

Specifically for instructors:

  • Behavior System Integration Workshop
This workshop explains the principles of the ACE behavior system and how it is effectively implemented, as well as how to integrate courses and coordinate assignments for a more successful semester.
  • Social Justice Research Course (SJRC) Workshop
In this workshop, an SJRC Master Mentor will explain the curriculum and give participants techniques for successfully guiding students through a primary research project.
  • Team Self Management (TSM) Course Workshop
In this workshop, a TSM Master Mentor will lead participants through the curriculum and provide insights into the pedagogy through personal experiences.

What Is Possible

Instructors at the Academy for College Excellence help students light the fire of intellectual curiosity. The ACE semester allows students to reclaim the educational experience as their own and gives them a secure foothold on pathways to knowledge-based careers. Most importantly, the ACE helps students take charge of their own learning through innovative teaching methods that create conditions supportive of learning in their minds, bodies and lives.

ACE instructors have the privilege and the challenge of being at the forefront of experimentation in acceleration. The ACE curriculum includes an array of proven and innovative strategies that give underprepared students the best chance to move successfully into regular community college academic programs. ACE’s accelerated curriculum and unique pedagogy help launch underprepared adult students into associate degree programs, including transfer degree programs in engineering, healthcare, information technology, counseling, social work, business, management and education.

The path to become an ACE instructor includes direct course work, practicum work, where teachers-in-training observe and assist in real student classes, teaching, working with a mentor, becoming certified, and participating in the ACE communities.

ACE Teaching Philosophy

The Academy for College Excellence is as much about teaching methods as it is about curriculum and content.

  1. Our central concept is “lighting the fire within,” helping students to reassess their educational experience and build self-efficacy and potential. Students with strong self-efficacy are highly motivated to persevere and eventually master difficult skills and concepts.
  2. self-efficacy: an individual’s judgment of his or her ability to organize and execute the actions needed to achieve their goals.
  3. We believe that underprepared students can master new skills and accelerate to college-level performance when they see clearly what college-level expectations are - both academically and behaviorally - and when they come to realize the powerful effect a college education will have on their future chances in the world.
  4. We provide a safe and stimulating environment for students to explore, experience and understand their gifts and strengths, and to find their voices.
  5. Learning and growth sometimes come from making mistakes. Thus we deal with our students on an individual basis, understanding the circumstances which affect their behavior. This understanding sometimes causes us to interpret ACE and college policies and rules to take into consideration the complexity of students’ lives.
  6. We value building academic, personal and professional skills because students need knowledge and success in all of these areas.
  7. We treat our students with trust, respect, compassion and empathy while providing clear expectations and consequences.
  8. As a faculty, we operate as a team with shared responsibilities. We do what we say in order to provide a consistent operating environment for our students. This allows them to learn, take risks and build sufficient trust and confidence to become successful students and professionals.
