REASON FOR BECOMING INVOLVED WITH ACE
After attending a full day information session about ACE at Cabrillo, I decided to attend the first FELI for ACE given at the Quaker Center in the summer of 2006. After completing the FELI I was eager to co-teach my first Foundation Course at Las Positas. I have now worked with four cohorts of students. It has been an amazing journey watching students who really did not believe they were college material succeed in college courses. I have been a math teacher for many years and watched basic skill students really struggle with figuring out how to do college. The ACE curriculum and cohort model gives students all the skills, academic and non-academic necessary to succeed.
As the ACE program developed I attended a second training FELI during the summer of 2007. Since then I have become a Master Mentor and teach FELI’s two or three times a year. I continue to do this work because I believe the personal transformation and the potential for transforming education in at the community college are real and important.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I was even president of the Future Teachers of American club in high school. At Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN I got a secondary teaching credential to teach mathematics, physics and chemistry. My first year of teaching was in a military dependent junior high school in Hanau, Germany in 1972-3. I went on to teach two years in Florida while I completed a Master’s degree in Science Education and my husband completed a PhD in Physics. I taught high school math for two years in Albuquerque, NM before moving to Northern California. While raising two young children I completed a Masters in Mathematics at Cal State East Bay, and in 1988 I joined the mathematics/computer science faculty at Chabot College in Hayward, CA. In 1998 I was hired as a full-time mathematics faculty member at Las Positas College in Livermore, Ca where I am today.
I have had two main passions during my time at Las Positas. I am co-founder and co-coordinator of the Integrated Learning Center. This center is a place where students can get help with mathematics, English and ESL. Five years ago I became involved in the ACE program and helped replicate this program at Las Positas where it is called the College Foundation Semester. I am actively involved in expanding this program and will offer a FELI (Faculty Experiential Learning Institute) in August 2010 to increase the number of faculty trained to work in our CFS program.
In addition, as a full-time mathematics faculty member I teach a full range of math courses from the pre-algebra level to the multivariable calculus level.
